Lao
P.D.R. Trademarks
Trademarks registered in Laos are protected
under the Decree of the Prime Minister on Trademark No. 06/PM dated
January 18, 1995. Applications can be filed for registration of
trademarks, service marks, collective marks, and figurative marks.

Application for Registration:
All documents required for filing an application must be prepared
in Lao, French or English in printed letters.
The
following documents must be submitted along with the application
for registration.
- A
duly notarized Power of Attorney issued by the applicant.
- Certified
copy of the trademark registration in home country and its English
translation.
- Copy
of the company registration.
- Twelve
specimens of the mark. The size of the prints should not be
under 5 cms. or over 10 cms. in height or length.
- Specification
of goods or services to be covered by the application.
Registration Procedure:
After the application and required documents
have been filed, the Science, Technology and Environment Organization
will examine the application and issue a notice if additional
evidence is required. This must be submitted within 30 days after
issuance of said notice. It would be very useful to submit as
much evidence of prior use as possible in support of the application.
It takes approximately 5-6 months for an application to be approved
for registration if there are no problems with regard to the application.
Upon registration, the Science, Technology and Environment Organization
will issue a Certificate of Trademark Registration and will publish
the result of the investigation.
Period of Registration:
The registration of a trademark, service
mark, collective mark, and/or figurative mark is valid for a period
of 10 years. An application for renewal can be made before its
expiration.
